Hobbies – Creative Experiments in Graphics, Games & Tech - Shiben Bhattacharjee
Hobbies
Whether it’s the tiny details of a craft, the spark of a new skill, or the journey of building something fun 🛠️, I’m thrilled to share my hobbies and experiences with you. Dive in and discover the things that keep me driven and inspired!
Bare Beats
Most binaural-beats 🎧 apps/sites are overcomplicated with spiritual marketing fluff, distracting UI, ads, signup walls, proprietary, and unnecessary features such as white noise and ambient music and whatnot.
Hence I created this minimalist open-source web-app where you control the actual scientific variables and ... that's it, you get your "bare beats"!
Indus Seal Generator
I've always found the Indus glyphs deeply enigmatic and beautiful. Recently, I came across Yajna Devam’s cryptanalytic decipherment. While exploring his work, I thought: wouldn’t it be cool to write my own name in this ancient script? That curiosity and my past computer graphics experience sparked this project: a tool for anyone to generate their own Indus seal. The idea is simple, so is the implementation.
Available as a webpage 💻, an Android app 📱, and here's the GitHub 😊.
Kya Challa
During the early days of COVID-19, when I found myself unemployed, I decided to make the most of my free time by starting this channel as a fun and creative outlet 🎥. At one point, the "Kya challa?" video went viral 🌟, giving the channel a surge of attention and motivating me to continue for a while.
Visit the official site kyachalla.com. I'm deeply grateful for the positive response from people who genuinely enjoyed the content, and I cherish the unique experience of this YouTube adventure.
Kya Challa - Extra
This Extra channel, unlike the name suggests, was more about exploring visually creative 🎨 projects that caught my interest based on internet trends. It also served as a dedicated beatboxing audio library for the kyachalla.com channel, catering to the many viewers who had been requesting those audios as standalone content. 🎤
Simple C Raytracer
This is a simplest possible raytracer written in C, intentionally brute force, with minimal usage of pointers and external libraries, for easy understanding of the basic theory. This was part of a workshop, Build a Raytracer, conducted by Dreamworks India at BITS-ATMOS Hyderabad 🎓 2012 and I was a part of it. Read more about it here and find the GitHub here.
Random Sketches
I enjoy drawing and making sketches from time to time 🎨. Blog posts with the tag sketch is where all my sketches are linked. Watch this space for more! ✍️
This Website
This website itself is a hobby project that I thoroughly enjoyed creating. It’s designed with specific goals in mind: a simple, CSS-based structure that embraces semantic HTML 🌐 for clarity and accessibility. I decided to go with simplecss.org and I love it.
The site is intentionally static and free from unnecessary JavaScript, keeping it lightweight and efficient. However, to ensure maintainability, it incorporates dynamic elements 🛠️, so I don’t have to manually update headers, footers, and shared components across all pages. This operates entirely offline, with newly updated static pages deployed directly to the hosting space. This approach eliminates the need for costly dynamic hosting, which would be excessive for my requirements and unnecessary for the site's functionality.
It’s a perfect blend of simplicity, functionality, and efficiency: an approach I’ve truly enjoyed bringing to life!
