Step into the world of one of the oldest scripts known to humanity: the Indus script โœจ! Inspired by the captivating symbols of the Indus Valley Civilization ๐Ÿงฑ and based on the work of Yajna Devamโ€™s cryptanalytic decipherment, this tool lets you create your very own digital Indus seal, featuring your name (or any text) rendered in the script itself.

How to use

Creating your seal is easy. Use your device's Indian language keyboard to enter text. For ease of use on the Web Page, an embedded keyboard is also available for Indian scripts where you can type in English and it will live convert it. When using this, try out capital letters or double vowels to achieve the nuances of Indian language's articulations and maatra strengths. Once you have entered text, just hit the generate button and that's it. You have your very own Indus Seal! โœ…

indus seal generator usage

Somethings to keep in mind: any Indian script will get you a correct transliteration, while English, being a non-phonetic language, will give approximate results. Indus Script is written right to left, hence your seal will come right aligned. Spaces and newlines are not trimmed out, so you can use them to visually compose your text. Special characters are ignored and will result in empty spaces. Those special characters don't map to any Indus Glyphs, given all the Indus glyphs are special ๐Ÿ˜ amiright? ๐Ÿ˜‚ That's a good one!

๐Ÿ†— Your text is now transformed into an ancient-style inscription. Everything runs right in your device, whether you are using the webpage or the android app, and is very lightweight. So generate as many times as you want! Then download the PNG โฌ‡๏ธ, process it further, use it as a WhatsApp sticker, anything you want.

How it works

The user input is first converted into a single unifying script called IAST ๐Ÿ–‹๏ธ. This text is then mapped to a series of glyph Ids, which are placed and composited on a WebGL canvas. The glyph designs (originally in SVG) are pre-processed in a special "SDF" format which allows the fragment shader to render them with lighting and material effects.

To do

This project started as a personal passion, but if it resonates with others, thereโ€™s much more to explore from deeper customization to open-source collaboration ๐Ÿ”“. For now, enjoy crafting your own piece of ancient history!
